About Yachting
Yachting is a physical activity involving boats. It may be racing [sailing] boats, [Cruising (maritime)] to distant shores, or day-sailing along a coast.
Yachting as a sport
Whilst sailing's invention is prehistoric, racing sailing boats is believed to have started in [the Netherlands] some time in the [17th century], whence it soon made its way to England where custom-built racing "yachts" began to emerge. In [1851], a challenge to an American yacht racing club in [New York] led to the beginning of the [America's Cup], a regatta won by the [New York Yacht Club] until [1983], when they finally lost to [Australia II]. Meanwhile, yacht racing continued to evolve, with the development of recognised classes of racing yachts, from small [dinghy sailing] up to huge [maxi yachts].
These days, [yacht racing] and [dinghy racing] are common participant sports around the developed world, particularly where favourable wind conditions and access to reasonably sized bodies of water are available. Most yachting is conducted in salt water, but smaller craft can be - and are - raced on lakes and even large rivers.
Whilst there are many different types of racing vessels, they can generally be separated into the larger yachts, which are larger and contain facilities for extended voyages, and smaller harbour racing craft such as dinghies and skiffs.
[Dinghy racing] are conducted on sheltered water on smaller craft, usually designed for crews of between one and three people. They are almost all equipped with one mast. Some have only one triangular sail, but most have two configured as a [sloop], and usually carry a [spinnaker], a large, bulging sail designed for sailing "with the wind". Most races are conducted between vessels of identical design ("one design" racing). In these races, with identical equipment the sailors best able to make use of the ambient conditionswin.
Dinghy designs vary from small, stable, and slow craft for novice sailors to lightweight, high-speed designs that are very difficult for even experienced crews to sail safely and effectively. Australia's [18ft Skiff] class are the fastest monohull dinghies, reaching speeds of up to 40 kilometres per hour even in relatively light winds. Sailing has a reputation for being a boring spectator sport, but skiff racing can be very exciting, particularly in unpredictable conditions where crews struggle to keep their boats upright. Various multi-hull racing classes are even faster.
Various one-design dinghy classes are raced at the [Summer Olympic Games].
Larger yachts are also raced on harbours, but the most prestigious yacht races are point-to-point long distance races on the open ocean. Bad weather makes such races a considerable test of equipment and willpower just to finish, and from time to time boats and sailors are lost at sea. The longest such events are "round-the-world" races which can take months to complete, but better-knownare events such as the [Fastnet race] in the United Kingdom and the [Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race] along the east coast of Australia. As well as a first-past-the-post trophy (called "line honours"), boats may race under a handicap system that adjusts finishing times for the relative speeds of the boats' design, theoretically offering each entrant an equal chance.
Cruising - yachting as a lifestyle
[Cruising (maritime)] involves traveling on a boat. It could be a trip to the other side of the bay or across the oceans to the islands of the South Pacific. Safe cruising across long distances requires a degree of self sufficiency and a wide range of skills beyond handling the boat. Knowledge of [navigation], [meteorology], mechanical and electrical systems, [radio], [first aid], sea survival, [nutrition] and more are needed and can be life saving when cruising to distant shores. In the UK a system of certification is run by the [Royal Yachting Association] which includes a range of courses, both theoretical and practical, covering these areas.

Yachting Questions and AnswersSailing (yachting) advice needed- please can you help?Q) I really want to get in to the professional side of sailing, competitive or otherwise. My dream jobs would either be as part of a racing yacht crew or a yacht designer. The thing is I am 21 and about to graduate in an entirely unrelated degree- have I already shot myself in the foot?
I only got in to sailing since I started Uni and whilst I have no practical experience of life on the waves (but I've read everything!) I really, really want a job connected with yachting, either competition or luxury.
I would have thought the design side of things would be beyond my reach without a relevant degree- true?
Also I am not sure if racing. touring yacht crews even get paid- and how do you get in to it in the first place?
Which is the better option and what is the most sensible course for me to take? I don't really want to sit through another degree again if I can avoid it- I'm getting old (well, 21)!.
Any help and serious answers would be gratefully recieved- thanks so much!

I would say good luck, but I hope it isn't your friend's son.The names of the 3 men who died in the yachting accident in the Solent Sept 2006?A) Two of the three men who died from yacht Ouzo may have been conscious when they hit the water, it was revealed at an inquest today.
James Meaby, 36, and Jason Downer, 35, both had time to manually inflate their lifejackets. The third casualty, Rupert Saunders, 36, was wearing an automatic lifejacket. It's not known whether the men inflated their lifejackets on entering the water, or whether they did so onboard moments before a collision. Mr Meaby, whose body was recovered off the Isle of Wight on 22 August, died of drowning and hypothermia. His friends, who were found 10 miles away a day later, had both drowned.
The wreckage of the Sailfish 25 Ouzo has still not been found. It's thought it may have collided with a larger vessel when it left Bembridge, Isle of Wight, on the evening of 20 August for a regatta in Dartmouth.
Earlier this week Hampshire Police examined the hull of the P&O ferry The Pride of Bilbao and took the vessel's black box data recorder. How can it be the royal Cork yacht club. I grew up in the 80s where as a kid id have to listen to all the irish politics. But if they are so proud to be the republic of Ireland, how can the cork yacht club call itself Royal - or do they just want the prestige! Im sure theres a good reason
A) OK Wikipedia to the rescue
the club was formed in 1720 before the Republic of Ireland was created. Happy Sailing!!!How do you get from the airport into Kuala Lumpur? and where can we watch the America's Cup yachting?Q) I am travelling to KL this week, and would like to know what the cheapest and easiest way to get 6 people from the KL airport into the city is? How much would it cost?
Also, is there anywhere we could go to watch coverage of the America's Cup yachting while we're there?
Any other info about what to do in KL would be great!
A) The easiest way to get from the KLIA airport to Central station in downtown Kuala Lumpur is with the KLIA Express train. Taxi is also available and should get you there for RM50 to RM60 (RM being the local currency) no more. A more expensive alternative would be renting a car on the spot.
As for the America's cup ... it is hosted by Valencia (Spain) this year. The event is organised every 4 years and Malaysia is in a bid to host the America's cup in 2011. A bit urly to provide feedback on that event ;-)
Perhaps you are looking for information on the Monsoon cup where several America's cup teams will participate? This will be held at Duyong Island in Terrenganu, the most northern state on the eastcoast in Malaysia, between Nov 28 and Dec 2, 2007.
