Questions and Answers

Cheap holidays in Turkey?

Q) I was reading the papers the other days about travel companies slashing the prices of holidays in Turkey to an unbeliveable £20 or something.. anyone taken advantage of this or got an amazingly cheap holiday there recently?

A) Don't do it even if it's free. Unless the price of your physical and/or mental integrity is as cheap as that.

Has anyone been to Turkey on holidays?

Q) And is the beer expensive?

A) Been there 5 times... The beer is quite expensive, also in the supermarkets... In overall, the alcohol based drinks are quite expensive. Except for Raki (specialty), Turkish Vodka (water with a little Vodka taste), and Turkish Gin (bweeek). Those 3 things are cheap their and not very good.

had numerous holidays in turkey would this have any effect going on holiday to cyprus?

A) Cyprus does not place any restriction for people that traveled to Turkey or any other country. Cypriot citizens are traveling to Turkey since 2003 when the Turkish gov allowed them to do so. The only issue is when it comes to travel, is for people that travel directly to the occupied areas of Cyprus and not through the legal ports and airports in the free areas and then cross through the "green" line. Turkish citizens of course can travel to Cyprus as long as they arrive through the legal ports and airports.

Holiday in Turkey still in light of bombings?

Q) I'm due to go to Turkey on holiday in 2 weeks time, but am fearful to do so after the recent bombings. Changing my holiday would cost a lot of mney. Should I ignore the expense and change my plans?

A) I live in Turkey and I do not think I will die in a couple of days.. Besides I am not planning to leave this country ever. Do you think the possibility of dieing from a bomb attack is more for you than for me ? Where on earth is safety guaranteed 100% nowadays ? And reply to the Mr "freedom for Kurdistan". You are growing like rabbits in Turkish land; some of you even have 10-15 kids and now you are calling a part of our country Kurdistan ? You are just a puppet of the imperialists. If you really love Kurdish people, why are you bombing tourism targets when so many Kurdish people is also in the business ? Why are you suggesting the people to go to Greek Islands ? Are there Kurds living in Greek Islands also, you idiot ?

What is the best way to take currency GBP to Turkey--holiday?

A) You can bring your GBP with you as there are plenty of change offices here, also the banks and post offices provide change facilities. Another option is to just use your debit card to withdraw money from the cash dispensers as you need it, although I believe a small fee is payable on each transaction, but at least you'll only have the card to look after, rather than a lot of cash. (Most hotels do have safety deposit boxes). A more expensive option is to use a credit card. If I was a tourist, I would use a combination of both cash and debit card, ie., bring a little cash, but mostly draw on the debit card. A credit card is always useful, 'just in case'. Some people still like to use Travellers Cheques, as they have the advantage of replacement should they be lost of stolen, but that's a personal choice. One other thing, it is a good idea to change a very small amount of GBP into Turk Lirasi (the min your bank will do) before travelling, in case you want to use it as soon as you arrive, eg., refreshments, trolley at the airport, etc. It's true that the locals here will accept GBP, but on small items you often end up getting a poor exchange rate, ie., you'll pay more than the item is really worth! Have a great holiday!

I am moving to Turkey - what extended Holidays are there that I can expect to get off from work?

Q) I accepted a job in Turkey and will be moving there next week. I want to plan trips for my family and friends to come visit me, but understand that the holidays - times when I will not have to work - will be different than in the U.S.. What are the dates from now through 2008 that most Turkish companies give their employees off work (For popular Muslim or national holidays).

A) If your employers aren't jerks, you'll get the following days off: October 29 (founding of the Republic) April 23 (Children's Day) May 19 (Youth and Sport Day) August 30 (Victory Day) January 1 (New Year's Day) Seker Bayram (commemorates the end of Ramadan, a few days off) Kurban Bayram (Feast of the Sacrifice, a few days off) However, a lot of employers work their employees to the bone, including 14-hour days everyday (including weekends--oh wait, maybe you'll just work 10 hours on Saturdays and Sundays), truck your lunch in from some nasty place and won't allow you to leave the office--even to go to the pharmacy--while the owner of the company and his worthless kid who is being groomed to take over but couldn't care less, jet off to Paris or Dubai. This was the case at the last Turkish-run company where I worked. Employees there got one day off at either Bayram, and just made something around 1000 YTL/month (about $850). (I didn't make much more, btw.) That was it. I had to beg to be let off work at 7 pm. If you'll be teaching, though, you'll be getting the above days off and then some.

Would anyone ever serve TV turkey dinners on holidays?

Q) There's a great (kind of sad) scene in Woody Allen's film, "Broadway Danny Rose", in which he has all his guests to Thanksgiving dinner in his tiny apartment and serves frozen TV dinners. Would anyone here ever do that, say if they didn't want to, or couldn't cook a big feast? (Allen's character is broke, too). I'd like to try it sometime, as a lark...

A) I did it. I don't know how to cook and it was a long time ago so everyone knows now not to ever come to my house for a meal hahah I micro'd 9 meals....3 apiece. ....Hey, they ate it and definately will remember it for as long as they can. Have fun! DO IT! ~wink, wink~
