Where can I find free baby knitting patterns for beginners?

Q) Ive never knitted before but would like to try and knit some baby cardigans and hats for my unborn baby boy. Where can I find free online baby patterns in the UK and also instructions on how to knit and how to understand the patterns? thanks.

A) There are a number of sites online for both directions and patterns. Here's just one: http://www.freepatterns.com/list.html?cat_id=3 For more, just enter "free baby knitting patterns" in the search bar and you'll find all kinds of things. There's also plenty of "how to knit" sites: http://knitting.about.com/od/learntoknit/Learn_to_Knit_Basic_Knitting_Skills.htm http://www.worldknit.com/howto/howtoknit/beginningtechniques/knit.html However, as a suggestion, if you having knitted before, I'd recommend you start with something easier that baby clothes. Knitting is really very easy; the hard part is getting the gauge right (how tight/loose you knit) and shaping the armholes, etc.to make it fit right. I'd suggest you start on something easy that will let develop some consistent tension on the yarn and used to doing it. Try a small baby afgan. Then move to the baby cap which take some shaping and then the cardigan. Congrats on the baby!

Need help finding a free knitting pattern for a cute, girly baby bonnet?

Q) Needs to be size newborn or 0-3 months. I've looked at tons of them online, but all are either too big or not very feminine - I'd prefer something with a ruffled or scalloped brim, but as long as it looks girly it's fine by me. I'd love to start on one tonight - can anyone help me find a good pattern? And preferably not on super tiny needles. ;) Size 4 and up would be reasonable.

A) I agree with you about needle size....I love using big needles and thick yarn!! Anyway, I love Lionbrand.com's pattern guide. They have tons of stuff. Go to pattern finder. It's terrific! Good luck!

PLEAASEE!?! maybe i didn't really make it clear- i am not looking for an actual jumper from a store. i am looking for a knitting PATTERN for a jumper! thanks for you answers livi and jen, but that wasn't what i was looking for!

A) There aren't any free patterns like Macie. The designer says on the Berroco website http://www.berroco.com/knitbits/knitbits_178_H.html that "Macie was inspired by a jumper/apron I spotted on a waitress in a cafeteria in Union Square, NYC. Knit in Fluff #6601, it has straps of wide twill tape and drawstring cording at the dropped waist and on the pockets." You can, of course, use any yarn that gets the same gauge, but you'll need to buy the pattern. It's in Berroco #261 Nostalgia, which retails for $6. Maybe you can find a used copy for less. Here's a free crochet pattern for a stylish apron: http://www.crochetme.com/more-than-an-apron You could adapt it by knitting the same shapes & following the finishing instructions. Or add pockets and eyelets for a drawstring to this apron from Knitty: http://www.knitty.com/issuespring04/PATTpartyapron.html

A) if you are any good with the computer then you can try downloading and installing a program called "sweaters" from www.greatknitdesigns.com this program is available for free and allows you to design as well as print out a pattern once you have done a test swatch with the wool and needles that you intend to use, and designed what style you want. It allows you to select any size from babies to large mens jumpers and cardigans etc. Good luck! The only thing the unregistered version won't let you do is save your pattern for later use but you can copy and paste it into your word processor and save it there.

Am looking for Elizabeth Zimmerman's Baby Surprise Jacket pattern.?

Q) Does anyone have a copy of Elizabeth Zimmerman's knitting pattern for the Baby Surprise Jacket? (free)

A) The Baby Surprise Jacket pattern by Elizabeth Zimmermann (two n's) is a copyrighted pattern. You can buy it for $3 from Webs in Northampton, Massachusetts: http://yarn.com/webs/0/0/0/0-1202-1209-1217/0/0/3802/ They did a knitalong on their podcast, Ready, Set, Knit! http://yarn.com/s/podcast.html and made arrangements with Schoolhouse Press, which owns the pattern, to sell it individually. Otherwise, you can find the pattern in two of Elizabeth Zimmermann's books, "Knitter's Workshop" and "The Opinionated Knitter." Check your local library. Baby Bootie patterns?

Q) Does anyone know of a website where I can get a free pattern for matching knit baby hat and booties? I have been looking for weeks, but can't find a bootie that actually looks cute.

A) These knitting patterns for baby booties are all easy enough for beginners. Some booties are knit in the round on double points; although this is something I encourage you to tackle, these patterns are all knit on straight needles and then seamed. You will have to understand increasing and decreasing to knit these patterns; booties do need some shaping in order to fit the foot. But this isn't difficult so give these patterns a try!
