Dvd players Questions and AnswersHow do 'Upscaling' DVD Players Work?Q) From what I can gather, DVD films are "compressed" to fit on the space available on a DVD disk, this is why you can't fit high definition film on a DVD disk (they take too much space). How do these "Upscaling" DVD players work then? If there's no extra information on the disk how can it display it? Is there really any difference to playing it on a top of the range standard definition DVD player?
A) You're absolutely right my friend. It doesn't convert DVDs to High Definition what it does is makes DVD Video look better on High Definition fixed pixel dipslays like LCDs and Plasmas by basically converting it to the native definition of those TVs (Btw it doesn't work that well in CRTs).
Plus DVD players with upconversion have more post processing features done to the video like De-interlacing, De-noising, Sharpening, Auto Luminance, etc.
But remember one thing, these features and basically what upconverted DVD players do are also done by Good TV sets and Good Receivers/Amplifiers by themselves, so if you have either one of those (check your manual for techinical info). You barely or actually won't see the difference.
I hope this helps.divx dvd players?Q) am i right in thinkin that you can burn a film to dvd as if it was going to played on a pc but it will play on divx enabled dvd players,,,or am i way of the mark,,,,,lol
A) If you're DVD player is DivX compatible, it means that it can play AVI files directly. Most movies in AVI format are of 700 MB. So, to play the file on the player, you just have to put the single 700MB file on a normal 700MB CD-R and insert the disc in the player. If the player supprts DivX, it will play the movie. Its the same as the single AVI file playing on your PC. You don't need to convert the movie to DVD formatAre DVD players the same in Ireland???Q) If I was going to visit Ireland, do the DVD players there play DVDs that I have here in the US? I see all of this stuff about Region codes, and am now utterly confused...I never thought about it until I say Region code stuff.
A) Hey, Check out this web site for dvd hack codes, its sooo simple. I had the same problem with dvds I bought in the states but it was just a matter of getting a hack code for my dvd player at www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks following the instructions and then hey presto my irish dvd player plays american dvds!!! Yay! Happy viewing!cheap dvd players?Q) any cheap dvd players around that play all types of disc i.e. copied films etc. if so how much and were from.
A) Asda are about the best. They usually play copies too!Why are DVD players so loud when they work?Q) Seems like Cd players in cars and Cd readers in computers are quieter or is the backgound noise? I know that a DVD has to read more, so is it the processing noise that I'm hearing?

A) Have the TV's got any other inputs? if so what do they look like? You will be able to adapt if they have, e.g. 3 phono sockets.which dvd recorder will alow me to watch the discs i have recorded on it on other dvd players?Q) i want to record my videos onto dvd and be able to watch them on other dvd players
A) All DVD Recorders produce a compatible disc that can be played on other DVD units, but you have to FINALIZE the disc once you have recorded it... if you don't do that, you can't move the disc to any other DVD player.
Once I've finalized a disc, I pop it into my laptop to make sure it will play. Can you use normal batteries with portable dvd players?Q) was wanting to buy a cheap one for a long flight im going on though most portable dvd players seem only to have 2.5 hour battery life? can u use ur own other than wat is provided?
A) No. Like a laptop battery, a portable DVD will have a model specific battery to run it. You can't use your own.Why is the sound from my cd and dvd players jittery?Q) Why is the sound from my cd and dvd players jittery? This has just suddenly happened today. When I play music cds on them, the sound is all jittery and slower than normal. I have tried to burn some stuff from them and that's fine, the mp3s when played are okay. Could somebody please tell me what I have to do in order to address the problem?
Oh I use XP and Windows Media 11. I have also tried other players and they are the same. It's a hardware problem?
A) Your drive might be failing, try those same CD's on another computer...if they don't jitter...your drive could be failing since you have tried lots of other software.multi region dvd players?Q) i want to bid on a dvd from ebay that is region one im not sure if i have a multi region dvd player is a ps2 or a computer dvd drive capable of playing different region dvd's?
A) Don't know about PS2 but computers are capable of playing region 1 or 2.
BUT... you have to manually change the region in Windows and it will only let you do it a limited number of times (3 from memory). Then it blocks and you're stuck on whatever the last one you changed to is.

The Prosonic DVD player is a worldwide multiregion player. In addition to your domestic discs it will play any DVD, from any region, on any TV no matter what is the video format: PAL or NTSCDvd players?Q) i am planning on purchasing a dvd player but not sure on what brands are good to get fro a decent price, so do you know of any good ones to get?
A) I bought a Toshiba Model D-RW2SU Recorder/Player recently for $148 Cdn, and it is excellent. I've had one of their Players for about three years, that cost about the same amount, and never had any trouble with it.dvd players?Q) I want to buy a decent dvd player (I never had one before) I don't want to spend a fortune. brand name/ model? Regards-Bob.
A) buy a PS2 u get a DVD player and video game system.Recording DVD's that also play on older players.?Q) I did get an answer earlier saying :
1.Some dvd players (especially older ones) will not play 'burnt' dvd's so not matter what you do they will just not play
2. quality of the blank dvd is a factor - generic white label disks are not the most reliable - stick to name brand (Sony, Memorex, etc)
3. media type (+r or -r) can be a factor both have their issues with playback in non-computer players
all of things are a factor and you will not solve all your problems - just part of the fun of making your own dvd's
try buying a sample pack of one disk of various manufacturers to test with, once you find something that seems to work then stock up .
the problem is not as common as it was 2-3 yrs ago but still is there
2 - older DVD players are more likely to play DVD-R's and DVD+R's so you'll have to use those instead of the +R/W and -R/W's that you're currently using.
2- Do not use VR mode. Most DVD players are not equipped to handle that format
WHAT WORKED FOR YOU?
A) This answer IS very valid. Recorded DVDs may or may not playback in a certain player for any reason that you can imagine. In other words, you will just have to try some in a questionable player and see what happens. It is very confusing and frustrating at times.Make DVD's compatible with other DVD players?Q) I recorded a DVD from a VCR with a SONY RDX-VX530 DVD Video Cassette Recorder/ DVD Recorder.
I format the DVD as VIDEO or VR and then finalize them.
I used DVD +R/W and/or -R/W CD's
The DVD will play back on on my Sony recorder and Window Media Player on my computer. They will not play on DVD players of several of my friends . However they have no trouble with commercial DVD's.
What kind of discs and formats do commercial DVD's use?
Any ideas?
Thanks Peter
A) couple of issues here 1. some dvd players (especially older ones) will not play 'burnt' dvd's so not matter what you do they will just not play
2. quality of the blank dvd is a factor - generic white label disks are not the most reliable - stick to name brand (sony, memorex, etc)

the problem is not as common as it was 2-3 yrs agoi but still thereQuestion About US DVD Players?Q) I got a region 2 DVD and a region 3 DVD today in the mail
My X-box won't play either one
I tried the region 2 on our old DVD player (c. 2002) and it worked fine. I haven't tried the region 3 yet.
So I'm wondering, aside from X-box, do DVD players in the US play any region coding or just specific DVD players... and if it's specific DVD players, what should I look for on the box that will let me know it'll work?
A) Region encoding is a means of controlling the manufacture of the players themselves and it detriments the end user by not being able to watch some content. There are a number of newer lower end DVD players available in the US market, like certain models from Cyberhome and Philips, which do subvert the region encoding, or can easily be modified to subvert the region encoding. Do a google search for Region Free DVD Players or similar and you will be SHOCKED at what you can learn!
Hope this helps!Burned DVD works on cpu not in DVD players?Q) I've burned quite a few dvd's that work on both my dvd players, suddenly, however, they have quite working on my dvd players. I used to use dvd shrink then burn with roxio because that's what my computer had. That quit working, so I tried dvd fab decrypter and nero. I tried to decrypt, shrink and burn using nero and roxio and they don't work. They are burned in something like .VOB The only thing I noticed different on my dvd's is this this last batch says DVD+R accuCORE on them.
The only way they play on my computer now is using Nero Showtime, media player doesn't even work anymore. Any ideas?
A) One thing I would suggest is to go back to whatever software that worked. DVDs are a little finiky and if you were makking them reliably, go back to whatever software you used to use.
One other thing, did you switch media types? Maybe just started using 16x media when the problems started? My burner, which is 3-4 years old, required a firmware update to even recognize the newer faster media.
Its kinda like film, in order for a dvd to burn faster, it has to be more sensative to the lazer. My old 2x burner was still running a laser hot enough to burn 2x media. When the faster media came along, my burner wouldn't burn reliably until I got the firmware updated. The update can't change the speed of the burner, but I think it lowers the power going to the laser so as to not overload the newer media.Need help with hd dvd players and upscaling etc.?Q) Hi i have got a hd lcd tv. I have seen in many shops dvd players that say something like hd dvd upscaling for around £50. If i bought a hd dvd and a dvd player like this would it be true hd or is there some other kind of hd dvd player that i need to make it fully hd if you get what i mean? If so can someone give me a link to such a dvd player.
Thanks
A) Wanna buy a dvd recorder for tv, but do most dvd players play these dvds properly?Q) I have a few movies that a friend of mine copied to blank dvds on their computer. I found that I can play the dvds on my laptop and on my bf's older dvd player, but not on my dvd players (which are more updated).
If I use a blank dvd to record a movie or tv show, will the dvd even play on most dvd players or do I have to find an older dvd player to watch them?
Also, do most dvd recorders just record or playback the dvds as well?
Thanks, I never had a dvd recorder so I don't know much about them.... :)
A) so long as u get a resinably priced dvd player that will do dvd +- r disks u wont have a problemAny good multi-regional DVD players out there?Q) I have a few DVDs from overseas and I want to buy a DVD player that can play them as well as my region 1 US DVDs. Are there any players that do that? (I've also heard that there's a disc you can buy that tricks a DVD player into playing another region's DVDs.....any info on that?)
Also, if I had a multi-regional DVD player, I heard that a new encoding format for Region 1 DVDs, RCE, won't be able to be played on a multi-regional player. Is this true? Do I need to worry about the new blue discs and HD discs that are coming out not being able to be played on such a player?
A) 1. Philips has a DVD Player thats the size of a Pizza box which can play multi-regional DVDs.
2. It will take a lot while before RCE can actually be used in commercial place because if the current DVD players wont support them, do you think people will replace that for this simple reason..??
3. Blueray Disk and HD Discs are unplayable by default in any of the existing DVD players. Its like trying to play DVD on a VCD player!! Dont worry there will be multi-region players for Blueray soon...
Remember when Region coding came, they thought its fool proof. Well nothing is. Every lock is pickable, so the proverb goes
