DVD Camcorder Help?

Q) My husband and I want to purchase a DVD camcorder for Christmas. My family is mainly in the USA, and I live in the UK. If we were to buy this thing, would the DVDs be compatible in the USA so I can send some home to the grandparents? None of the salespeople seem to know the answer to this question. If not, I think we'll go for the fully digital camcorder. Cheers!

A) Hi there, we had the same problem, its not nec the camcorder that makes a difference, its the format you burn the DVD's in. We bought a standard digital camcorder, downloaded the tapes to the PC as normal, but when burning the DVD's put the footage through DVD shrink which is freeware (www.dvdshrink.org), and selected multi region format, the dvd's can then be watched anywhere Hope this helps

Hitachi MV3000 handheld Digital DVD Camcorder?

Q) I have the above camcorder and I wish to transfer the movies from mini DVD-R disc's to main DVD disc's or transfer the movies to my computer. How do I do this?

A) You dont need to. There is a groove in the DVD drive disc tray where you can place a mini DVD. I've never seen a drive without one - even from the late '80s.

What software to copy camcorder DVDs to my computer, edit them, and write them to a new DVD?

Q) I have several mini (8cm) DVDs which have been recorded on by a DVD camcorder - what software should I use to copy the videos onto my computer, edit them, and write them back to a different DVD? A few notes to bear in mind: - the DVDs are formatted in VR mode as opposed to Video mode, and I'd want to write back to a new DVD in Video mode so the software would have to be able to deal with both and do any nessecary conversions - the different clips are all stored in one title and are split by chapters, and I'd want each chapter separated into different files - the videos are recorded at different qualities and aspect ratios, so the software would have to be able to deal with 4:3 and 16:9 at various quality levels, and preferably convert between them - I currently have a distinct lack of disk space, so a program which saved to disk with uncompressed AVI wouldn't much use as I'd run out of disk space far too fast. Any questions, please don't hesitate to message me.

A) http://www.ulead.com try one of them =) they have lots of trial things you can use for that. as for editing video, either buy an aditional hard drive, or usb external one. or doing them ONE at a time..

is it better to edit on a computer with a hard disk drive camcorder or a DVD camcorder?

Q) I am about to buy a new camcorder and want to edit my movies on my PC, however I am not sure if it easy to dowload (HD movies - i wanna use high definition) footage from a DVD HD camcorder onto PC then edit it and transfer it back to DVD on the camcorder in 8cm HD formt ???? Can anyone help

A) Since you already know you're going to be an editor, then stay away from the DVD-camcorder. Editing on the pc requires you "rip" your footage to the PC harddrive into an AVI file (Mac's use something else - MOV files, I think). Anyway, the DVD is meant for those who want to go from camera to DVD player immediately. I think the harddrive camcorders are ok, as long as you have firewire jacks to transfer the footage. But, for the biggest bang for the buck, go with a miniDV camera. If you've got enough budget to consider a harddrive camera ($500 or more, right?), they you can get a fully featured miniDV camera with MORE options than the harddrive cameras. miniDV cartridges are so inexpensive now, they're small and easy to store. If something goes wrong with the harddrive type cameras, then the whole camera is useless until it is fixed, and harddrives certainly aren't bullet proof yet - especially one that's going to be in a moving piece of equipment - I've dropped my cameras a few times. Good luck.

DVD camcorder?

Q) What is the best dvd camcorder for the money?

A) DV is analog? Last time I checked on my $4,000 XL-1s, DV meant Digital Video. When I first got my camera, people kept on asking me the same question; "Is it digital or is it tape." The answer is both. It records digitally on to tape. It's 0s and 1s, recorded Magnetically, similar to your Hard drive on your computer. That's how you can hook up your camera directly to your computer...they speak the same language (binary). On camera compresssion and the writability issues (skipping CDs) make the DVD camcorders a bad choice. Also, have you checked the prices of those mini-DVDs...they're freakin' expensive, and only get you about 20 minutes of video. DV tapes are about $3 a piece for consumer grade, provide you with 60 minutes of recording time (90 on LP), and are re-usable.

Bought a DVD Camcorder - it records, but the discs don't play on my DVD player.?

Q) My new Panasonic DVD camcorder records, and I can play the clips back on the DVD camcorder itself. BUT, the discs will not play on my DVD player. The discs are Panasonic DVD-RW discs (product # LM-RW30U3). The guy as Best Buy assured me they would work. The DVD is an RCA, fairly new. It DOES have the new-lloking tray with the small recessed area in the middle, into which the discs fit perfectly. But the TV screen says "not formatted properly" when I try to play back what has been recorded. I can still return the camcorder and discs (bought only last week, and saved the receipts), but I don't want to have to get a new DVD player. What I would love is if someone could either (a) tell me how to get my DVD player to play these discs, or (b) name a new 8 CM disc that would be compatiable both with my Panasonic DVD camcorder and RCA DVD player. Thoughts? Thanks for your help!

A) RW disks and RAM disk have the least compatiblity. Did you FINALIZE the disk that is required for Minus disks, that's required to see it on other systems. Also the system must support the disks. Any system 2 years or older may not. Any system in the last 24 months should but you have to finalize the disk. You might be better off with R disks as they are more compatible.

questions about dvd vs. mini dvd camcorder?

Q) is there a such thing as a dvd camcorder? i just bought a minidvd camcorder and i heard it wont work straight to a dvd player. if theres a dvd camcorder, can i just transfer that straight to a dvd player. cuz mini dvd u gota do through the pc i think. help!

A) Your mini DVD should work straight in your DVD player, providing it is a newer model that can handle DVD R and RW + and or -. it also needs to be able to take the smaller format DVD. I have not heard of a full size DVD camcorder, I assume that do to the size of a full size DVD the unit would have to be to large to appeal to the consumer market. The only reason you should have to import the file into your PC should be if you want to edit your video or re-burn it on a full size DVD.

Which camcorder is better, a DVD or a Hard-disk drive camcorder?

Q) I know a bit about video editing (using the Adobe Premiere Pro Software), but most of the editing I've done is for medical/surgical videos. I want to buy a camcorder for home videos, so I can edit them at home with the editing knowledge I now have, and I really need some good input on which camcorder is best for me. Although I know that probably miniDV or DV are the best for editing, they've been out there for a while, and I guess they will eventually be discontinued (just as the Beta, VHS, Hi8 and super 8 camcorders), so I want a "newer" format that will last several years. I have some experience with DVD camcorders, but the HDD ones are more appealing for the length of recording time and the fact that you don't need additional recording media. Any suggestions? Thanks!

A) If you want best quality video you've got to stick with MiniDV. The DVD and harddrive cameras still need to compress the video as it is stored to the HD/DVD which will lead to a loss in vidoe quality. I know Hard drive is popular right now, and before that DVD was really popular, but stick with the technology that will give you the best picture quality. It seems like your mind is made up, but I don't think they'll discontinue MiniDV any time soon. THere are cameras that sell for thousands of dollars and are were just produced that still call for MiniDV tapes. If you're terrified about the Future and want to stay on the cutting edge, get a Panasonic P2 card. They hold 8gigs, and they cheapest camera they go into starts at $5,000. -Methane

DVD camcorder on your computer?

Q) can you just put the dvd from a dvd camcorder and store it to your computer or if you can't can you put it in the drive and decripe it with DVD dicripter

A) once the disc is finalized in the dvd camcorder, it can be read in a computer's dvd drive - you would simply copy the files over to your computer's hard drive...or, if you prefer, you can also use dvd decrypter.

Recordable DVD & Camcorder question about discs?

Q) For Christmas I received a Sony DVD/VHS recorder. I've dubbed from VHS to DVD and recorded from TV onto DVD. I can play them back on the Sony but cannot play on another DVD player (also brand new) I also have a new Sony camcorder which records on mini discs. Those discs play on the Sony DVD player but not on any other one. Please give my possible reasons why this occurs! Thanks

A) Did you finalize the disks. If you are using -R disks them must be finalized to be used on other machine. Also RW disks don't always play on some machines and neither do +R disks. But +R disks don't have to be finalized to play on other machines that are +R compatible.

Which DVD Camcorder should I buy to take to film family moments and trip to Disneyland Paris ?

Q) Hello. I am trying to decide which DVD Camcorder to buy to film my daughters and be able to send the DVD to my parents. The gilrs love to watch all of our vacations or special moments where I have filmed them. We are going to Disneyland Paris for the first time and I want this fil the whole trip ! With the DVd I can simply put the DVD and pls what I have filmed. I don't want nothing too expensive, but at the same time something with quality. Maybe Canon ? or Sony ? Any suggestions ? Thank you !

A) Here's a link of the the available DVD camcorders with reviews/ratings: http://www.camcorderinfo.com/d/Reviews&level_b=Camcorder&level_c=DVD.htm I would suggest Sony over others because of the Easy mode that automatically picks the optimal settings. You pretty much just point & shoot. Good luck with your purchase and have fun at Disneyland.

Hitachi DVD camcorder File Help?

Q) Hi, thanks for viewing really hope you can help! I bought a Hitachi DVD Camcorder (model DZ-MV3000E) I have bought also a RAM DVD disc for it, but... It won't play on anything, I don't want to finalize the disc so is there any converting software that would convert .VOR or .VOB (i'm not sure :~\) to a file that would play on my laptop (like .WMV or MPG or something similair) I also have a Samsung DVD player that can record, I tried the dvd in that and it played but is there any way that I can record it onto a disk? even if I plug in the camera? I want to use the videos for editing... (if that helps any??) Thank You very much in advance

A) I am not sure why you do not want to finalise the disc - especially as the fact that you have not finalised it is propably the reason your disc "will not play on anything" You may like to try it this way Use a programme such as Ulead VideoStudio - you take the mini-disc out of your camcorder and put it into the DVD tray of your PC making sure it sits centrally in the little depression made for it. You may have to 'finalise' the mini DVD your camera manual will tell you how to do that. Inside VideoStudio you select "Insert DVD" and point the programme at the DVD and follow the prompts and the video is copied from the disc into the timeline of VideoStudio so that you can edit it - add lots of different videos together - add titles/music/narration - then output a file in any format you choose for playing on Media player or if you wish burn to a full size DVD to play in a standard player. Full details from :- www.Ulead.com or www.Ulead.co.uk ~

Is there a DVD Camcorder that records onto full size (4.7 GB) DVD's?

Q) I know that there are min DVD camcorders and stand alone DVD Recorder units, but I have a 400 disc Sony DVD player and I don't think I can put mini DVD's in there. I run a public access channel and people want to know what kind of camcorder they need to record their church services.

A) There is 2 answers to that Question. 1: No there is no such thing as a Camcorder to burn straight to a 4.7 Gb DVD but here are some ways as a simple solution. 1 is a compact Video to DVD by Sony. You plug in Usb or FireWire to maching pop in Blank DVD and presto. There is another option in which you would buy a whole new DVD player that lets you watch your camcorder movies and it will also burn them to DVD. And the easiest of all is the Computer Hope this helps... Stompy A.K.A Matt
