Connecting Questions and AnswersConnecting PCs running on Win 98SE?Q) I have two PCs running on Win 98SE. Removable drive (FDD or CDD) in one of them does not work. I want to connect the two PCs so that I may tranfer data from one to another. Both have only IOIOI ports. Can I connect them with an IOIOI cable? Would some external software (other than that available in Win 98SE) be required for this as it may not be possible to instal any new software on one of the PCs?
If the connecting is possible, would someone please explain the procedure.
A) Take the hard drive out of the computer that doesn't work, and set it as Slave with the Jumper on the back of the hard drive, and make sure the hard drive in the computer that works is set on Master. Hook them on the gray ribbon cable together. Put the Master drive at the end of the ribbon and the slave drive in the middle connector of the ribbon.
Good luckconnecting to my bt home hub?Q) hi i have a bt home hub and xbox360 wirelessly connected to it and was wondering if there is any way i can connect to xbox live threw the hub without turning on my pc and connecting to the internet.if so how do i do it thanks
A) You shouldn't have to turn your PC on to gain access to your hub. The idea of the Home Hub is that you can connect any wireless enabled device (with or without your main PC being on). The below URL gives some info as to the experience of others who have both the "infernal hub" (I'm not a fan) and an Xbox 360.

However i tried to connect it via the HDMI input but it did not work. I did use another monitor to try and help the setup but when I tried connecting the HDtv it either went completely blank or had a shaocking image quality. Any ideas?
Sorry I forgot to mention that the graphics card can handle two screens. When i was trying to setup the HD screen I was using the other monitor at the same time.
A) plug them both in and adjust each one idepenantly
till both are of usable quality
a good idea would be to look at the tv manual it should tell what to set up you pc too

This is my setup:
Xbox 360 outputs HD on Male Component
Which goes into Female to Female Component Phono adaptor
Which goes into 15m Male Component to Male DVI-I Cable
Which goes into DVI-D to M1-D (DVI P&D) M Adaptor
Which goes into Infocus LP340
NB: the DVI-D (24+1) F to M1-D(P&D) works fine as i have connected my laptop to it and it displays through the projector beautifully but i cant seem to get a signal down the dvi-i to Component even when i connect my laptop to it using another dvi-i to component 1.8m cable i own.
now i understand that i am connecting a dvi-d to a dvi-i here but that shouldn't matter as i am only transmitting a digital signal? right?
on another note what setting should i set on the 360? i switched the switch at the back to HD and changed the settings to 720P and 1080i all of which i had no joy with?
All of the cables and adaptors are brand new bought specifically for this application.
where am i going wrong? please help?
many thanks
Ru
Please only answer if your not a complete fool
NB: My projector only has DVI M1-D and Video inputs (no component) and on video it wont allow you to change the keystone settings
A) You need to connect RCA audio L & R
and VIDEO RCA to the 360 -and voila!

G a m i n g !Problems connecting to Second Life?Q) I have been a resident in the online community of second life since mid november, but in the last week or so have not been able to connect to the game.
The viewer gets as far as "connecting to region" and freezes
i have ninstalled the client and re-installed it, cleared my cashe, run a virus check, and generally pulled my hair out. I dont understand whats wrong and i still have an internet connection (which i am using just now)
i am on tiscali broadband and my settings havent changed
can anyone think of why i might not be able to connect!
thanks for you help
I have checked with tiscali if i am being affected by their "fair usage policy" and i have been told i am not, but last night i discovered that tiscali are blocking some ports. Second Life needs to connect to ports 443/TCP, 12035/UDP, 12036/UDP, 12043/TCP, and 13000-13050/UDP
I also rand a badwidth test and i discovered that instead for my usual 1mb i was getting 400 kb
I think it might be time to change from tiscali!
A) Hello, to give you the correct answer to your problem, I also use Second Life (have done since November) and i am on Tiscali (for a little over 1 month). During last week i lost connectivity to SL between the hours of 6pm and 11pm. I did everything you did, uninstalled and reinstalled SL, virus check, etc... However, it then came to light that Tiscali had limited my use as they classed me as a heavy user, so, under their 'Fair User Policy' is had all port blocked in peek hours (other than the one that IE uses). So therefore i am unable to connected to SL in peek times. I have, on many many occations, contacted Tiscali's call centre (in India) and they, each time, give me conflicting info about my connection availablity.
As the FUP states, 'If you don't use Peer to Peer or file sharing software it is unlikely you will ever be affected by this Fair Usage Policy. If you do use Peer to Peer or file sharing software, all we ask is that you use this software considerately and send and receive large files outside of peak hours.' So my arguement to them is that i do not use P2P software so i am not breaking their FUP but i am still being punished.
It did, up until 2 days ago, stated in Tiscali's own Terms and Conditions that if a problem is not sorted out with in 14 days you can cancel your contract without any questions, however today i notice that the T&C's have changed, without the 14 days notice they claim they will send out and if the new ones affect your product use then you can cancel your Tiscali contract.
Anywho, that is the bottom line and the answer to your problems. Hope this helps.Help connecting a digital camcorder to a TV please?Q) I have just brought a new camcorder but cant connect it to the TV. The camcorder came with a multi cable but the TV dosnt have the relevent holes, the instructions say if TV cant be used connect through video but video has no audio holes either, have tried connecting through the DVD player but that dosnt work. The camcorder hasnt got usb it has a mic DV and AV holes but nothing else (except the charger plug) any suggestions please
A) do u mean your tv doesnt have the holes for yellow red and white cables?
if your tv has a scart lead you can buy a adapter for the tv which is available in Game for about £5 you put the cables in this and then put into the scart socket on your tv.360share not connecting?Q) What has happened to my 360share? It is not connecting.
I have been using 360share to download music since the begining of this year and it worked fine. Now today it is not connecting. I have read other questions here and see it is a common problem recently.
I have requested my password from the 360share homepage (as i need it to contact their technical support) but they are not replying to my request.
The links to thier phone number is also not working.
When signing up with them i paid for unlimited acess so i am now really annoyed that I can't connect to it.
What should I do?
Is limewire safe to use?
Are there any good free download programmes other than Limewire?
I am thinking of switching to limewire but i feel cheated as i paid for the 360share and now I can't use it and am finding it impossible to get contact with their technical support team.
A) Relax, its a temporary situation. Limewire is not a viable alternative as it is riddled with illegal copies and viruses, if you have sent your request for your sign-in info it can sometimes take up to 4 hours for the system to send it to you. Regular maintenance of sites like the 360 can cause slowdowns and connection problems but they are only temporary.
Try to login again in a few minutes, be sure to cloce out of your browser and then go back in as sometimes this can be the problem (cookies expired, cache is full, etc.)Connecting Wireless Laptop To Router?Q) The laptop was bought just yesterday. It is an intel celeron windows vista machine. The router is a Newlink IEEE 802.11g. All the lights are on green, and for a while to laptop would connect to the router but the internet pages wouldn't show, now they are just not connecting. Any help? Obviously the internet on the computer is working fine.
Yes, it has worked previously with the my other computer.
How do I get to properties of the card?
A) Firstly, in my experience, any laptop generally comes with it's own software that manages internet/wireless connections. Therefore, every time you get the message "Wireless Network Detected", Windows tells you that it cannot manage this connection. So, right click the wireless icon in the bottom right hand corner and click "Status", then hit "Properties" and click on the "Wireless Networks" tab - then click the option to allow Windows to manage your wireless network. This should then bring up a balloon to alert you that Windows has found wireless networks within the range of your laptop. When you choose your network, if you have WEP/WPA encryption, you will be asked for the key which you will need to enter. If you don't have this key, you're a little bit rubber-ducked and will probably need to reset your router to the manufacturer defaults. Incidentally, you may have this information printed somewhere on your router, but if you have specified a key on the router setup, it may only reside with you.
Just because your lights are on, doesn't mean anything regarding your connection to your router, just means your router is connected!!!
Hope this helps
SteveConnecting an analogue fax to BT Home Hub.?Q) I am trying to connect the fax function of an All-in-1 to the broadband phone outlet of a BT Home Hub. The fax works ok if I prefix dialling with a 5 as obviously it reverts to my land line number.
However, I want my fax to use my broadband VOIP number.
BT India tell me this should be possible, but won't tell me how unless I use their costly personal IT consultant service. Has anybody succeeded in connecting an analogue fax to a VOIP line, and if so how. Obviously I can fax directly from the computer, but sometimes I have to resort to paper.
Should have added - I want the VOIP number to work for incoming faxes as well, which it doesn't do either.
a2wicked - been there, done that. It sounds too obvious doesn't it. The fax machine will dial out ok but when the called fax answers the two machines are unable to handshake. This does not occur if I dial out on the land line number. There is sweet FA in the hub manager that gives any clues, nor in the BT Broadband Help system.
A) cant you just dial out normally?? it should then go over the VOIP and display that number.. have a look around the homehub config pages there is might be a box to be checked.
maybe it is becuase the voice is already being transmitted as data that you cant then send data as data confusing huh
Connecting?Q) I want to know how important you think connecting is in any relationship, whether it be a friendship or more. And also why you feel that way.
Furthermore, would you agree with the following statement:
"There will always be someone who you feel you can connect with more than others."
A) quite agree....feel this phenomenon....u look at some one and start disliking him....and at the same time u look at some one else and feel u like him.....what is it.....its basically electro magnetic waves coming from our bodies which either attract or repel....and i also agree that some people u can just connect and connect better than others.Connecting?Q) I want to know how important you think connecting is in any relationship, whether it be a friendship or more. And also why you feel that way.
Furthermore, would you agree with the following statement:
"There will always be someone who you feel you can connect with more than others."
A) Connecting is part of the relationship, without it you can not really communicate. So it is important but I would never call it connecting. I would call it communicating.Connecting my laptop to the internet through the home network?Q) I can't get my laptop to access the internet through my home network. The network isn't locked so that's not the problem. When I search for networks, it comes up and gives the option to connect. I click connect but all it does is show the little screen saying it's connecting and after a few minutes that screen goes away and it's still not connected. I connected the laptop today to the libraries network so I know the wireless card is fine and all that, I just can't get it to connect to my home network...any ideas???
A) reset your wireless home router and set the internet up again, if u connect to the library then its just a case of reseting your router and possibly setting up the network againConnecting to wireless network but cant get on the internet? help plz?Q) i have on my laptop an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945AGB Network Connection. i was able to connect wirelessly for a few months now but ever since i tried setting up my range extender by plugging in my laptop directly, it wont connect to the interent. i get connection and everything but im not able to access the internet. ive tried doing a repair, update drivers, connecting to other networks i was previously able to connect to, disable the local area connection, etc (all the obvious stuff). i have a feeling that some of my settings were changed so it wont connect properly. any tech savy people know what might be wrong?
yes its connected to a wireless connection that is being used by other computers. the wireless device is on and connected and connects to the other wireless routers just fine. its just there is some sort of prevention of going to the interent. remember it worked before i directly to the wireless router. (and no its not a range extender problem. thats not even connected right now)
A) you're probably connecting to a device that isn't connected to your internet connection. Your extender may not have been set up correctly to connect to your wireless router. Or your router may not have a connection and everything is working ok.Connecting a router to a router?Q) Hello, Im haveing some trubles connecting my router. Here is a little back ground. We have one lan router connected to our hub that connects 4 hard line compters to the internet. I would like to change one of them and connect another router (to the origional router) so we have one router feeding info to 3 computers and one router that is connected to that router that feeds info to one hard line computer and one wireless computer. It is asking me for IP address and Gateway address How can i by pass this or if you can what do I need to do to find this info. (I have our IP address from comcast)
A) True. Two interfaces of the router cannot be in the same subnet.
So you will have to put your single pc (on second router) in a different subnet and configure routing.
Not worth the trouble with 4-5 PC's.problem connecting to x-box 360 live via router?Q) I brought home a router & decided to connect both my computer & x-box 360 through it. My internet on my computer work just fine but when connecting to X-box Live it shows that my IP has failed. When i connect directly to the modem though, i connect just fine but i really want to be connected to both. Any suggestions? i'm using a Linksys Wireless Router.
Second hand & its all wired together
A) If your Xbox is failing at the IP check, then first make sure the wire you use to connect it to the router is a good one. The only reason the Xbox would fail the IP check is if there is no connection to the DHCP server, or the DHCP server is not turned on. If connection is fine, then you'll need to get into the router setup screen via your computer. Find the DHCP option and make sure it is turned on. Also make sure the DHCP scope (or the number of allowed connections) is larger than 1 user. Try to make it for 5 users at least so the IP leases don't conflict.
(I.E. 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.6) Check the manual to see how to get into and change the settings. make sure the 360 settings are all placed to "get automatically"
If that doesn't help, then the wire you are using to connect to Xbox may be a crossover instead of a straight through cable. (Hold both ends side by side and see if the eight colors are in same order. IF so, it's straight through. otherwise it's a crossover cable used to connect, say 2 xboxs together instead of connecting to a router) I'd check that as a last resort, but I'm fairly positive it's your DHCP settings.connecting to AOL - is there options available?Q) Hi,
A friend of mine has AOL (not my 1st choice of an ISP) and in order to connect to Internet Explorer she has to click onto the AOL Icon to load up the AOL window where it shows 3 boxes as it's connecting to broadband.
When it does connect, all these pop up windows pop up, even though she has all the "protection" from AOL but the problem is they are AOL owned, like the buddy list, and AOL offers... and about 3 others. Is there an option to close all these down as she doesn't use the AOL front screen at all (only to connect) and then minimise to use Internet Explorer.
She also has Yahoo pop up blocker on the pc but again, the pop ups are AOL's ones and they appear before you open IE.
Any suggestions on perminently closing down these extra windows without having to physically click on them each time like she is doing at the mo?
Thanks!
A) If your friend has broadband, then she can just open Internet Explorer and begin browsing, as a Broadband connection is always available.
If the Broadband is provided by AOL well then that's a different story
which basically ends like this:
No you can't stop the buddy list, AOL offers, etc... from popping-upConnecting to wireless networks at hotels?Q) When I travel i normally bring my notebook, vonage adapter and quite often my wife. Some hotels charge for each wireless connection made. In the past when hotel still have hardwired connection I would bring a wireless router to connect all those devices. Is there a way to connect those devices to a wireless network without incurring charges. Someone suggested connecting a hub / router to a wireless gaming adapter and then connect the adapter to the hotels wireless network?
A) Connecting your laptop to a wireless network means your IP address is recorded and the session time too. Usually for the ones that charge you they give you a key so that they can track you. Using the gaming adapter won't bypass the system as the gaming adapter will have the ip address instead, and the IP address and session time will still be recorded. They will track it back down to you as you would probably be the only person not accounted for when they reconcile internet usage records.Help with connecting new computers to NETGEAR?Q) I am trying to set up a new desktop and a new laptop to net gear. The laptop should connect wirelessly and the desktop should connect using an adapter but I'm having the hardest time actually CONNECTING them. Could someone help me and maybe give me step by step instructions please??
A) your router should have a WAN port on the back of it. The cable from the modem should go there. Then there should at leaste be 4 wired ports on the back. The desktop will connect there as long as it has an ethernet card. Then the laptop will receive packets from the wireless signal. Make sure you set up your router for DHCP, and your 2 machines to automatically assign ip.. Then just set up the network on both machines and your done..Connecting 2 Computers VIA USB Flash Drive??Q) Connecting 2 Computers VIA USB Flash Drive??
How dose that work??
Can you read this and tell me if im right or not
''Connect 1 USB flash drive into the back of the desktop pc, then with the other USB flash drive, connect it to the back of the laptop, then they both will connect / 'talk' to each other then the laptop user can access the internet from the desktop computer''
If im wrong (that i most likely am, please tell me the way of doing it)
AND can you give me some websites where i can buy these from.
A) The USB flash thing is designed to be a KEY, so if you HAVE a network, the key will let the computers to talk to each other. But you can program these network parameters IN without using the key.
If you have High speed internet, then get a router so you can share the internet connection, and establish a network and share printers and files. Skip the Key thing, and set the workgroup to the same group, and name each computer with a different name. Then set File and Printer sharing.
If you plan to go wireless, then get a Wireless adapter for the 2nd computer.
Good luck
