Questions and Answers

Where can I get cheap ski boots in/around london?

Q) Have been ski-ing twice now and have been looking out for boots but not want to buy them in a resort in case of problems. Would like to have them fitted.

A) The key is to go somewhere with a variety of brands, with a proper boot-fitting area with informed staff. Every brand suits a different shape foot, so make sure you go somewhere with a good choice and with people that know what they're doing. Steer clear of anywhere that sells just one or two brands (like just Salomon, or just Atomic). You'll be lucky to find the right fit at a place like that. Snow+Rock is good, and have stores in Covent Garden, Kensington, The City and Romford. Ellis Brigham too. Some stores (like S+R) offer a fit guarantee, so if the boots hurt, you can bring them back and they'll fix them up, or exchange them for a different model. Also, ask about the footbed - the standard ones supplied by manufacturers are completely flimsy and unsupportive. A good boot-fitter will suggest upgrading you to a better footbed. This isn't them trying to get more money - it really makes a difference to whether your feet are tired and sore at the end of the day! Just remember, "cheap" isn't worth it if they're going to hurt! Good luck.

Where can I find cheap skiing holidays over the xmas period?

Q) I live in England

A) Well, that depends on where you live. You can probably find cheap skiing in, oh, say, Siberia; but getting there is not cheap.... and the amenities may not be up to snuff. So, try the closest place to home. Why you are asking this question on the Internet, without giving any clue to location, is beyond me.

Makeshift, or cheap, ski pants?

Q) My friend and I are going skiing this winter. We'll be on the bunny slopes for about a day, and that's it. I doubt I'll ski often, if again, so I don't want to buy a quality ski outfit. What work well in place of actual ski pants?

A) If it's not too cold, people ski in jeans or sweats, but I recommend some sort of snow pants...like what you might use to go sledding. The problem with anything but snow pants is that water will soak to your skin very very quickly, and you will be cold and miserable. So, you spend $40 on a lift ticket, $30 on a lesson, $20 on rentals, travel costs, food costs, blah blah blah, and you spend the day in the lodge because you are frozen! The very most important thing is gloves. When I was a ski instructor I refused to teach anybody without gloves or mitts. Snow is made of ice crystals, which are sharp. One fall without gloves may result in some blood to contend with! Don't forget the lessons! Skiing isn't like basketball or something, where you can learn to play a little at least without instruction. You absolutely need a ski instructor to get you on your feet, and I promise you, the rest of your day will be a dream!

where can we rent cheap ski clothing in Denver.?

Q) About to become first time skiers but do not want to spend 300 bucks each on new ski gear for what may be just one days activity on the slope. We want to either rent by the day or buy second hand.

A) Sports Rent Colorado in Arvada rents ski clothing -doesn't look expensive to me! Here's their website: Also, there is a factory outlet mall in Silverthorne in Summit County off I-70, right on the way to many of the big ski areas in Colorado. If you find you like skiing, this would be a great place to find bargains on clothing.
