Carpet laying Questions and Answerscarpet laying?Q) im laying my stair carpet at the moment anyone know where i start? top or bottom?. any other tips are greatly appreciated
A) Start at the top from the landing and good luckHow long should I wait before laying carpet after painting skirting board?Q) I am currently re-decorating a room with no carpet. I have been told that after painting the skirting board, I must leave anywhere between 3 and 14 days (depending on the source) before laying carpet as, if the paint is still 'soft', it can be easily chipped.
I would rather not wait 2 weeks if it is not necessary, however I don't want to chip the skirting board. Does anybody have any idea as to how long I should leave the painted skirting boards before laying the carpet?
Thanks!
A) 30 days to let the paint cure but even w/ the carefullest of carpet laying the base board can still scratch up.. Just knowing that you MIGHT have to touch up the paint helps if it does get scratched.. Carpet has a tough backing and they do have to "run it up the wall a bit"GLWhy do dogs scratch an area of the carpet before laying down?Q) My dog always does this before laying down and it bugs me as I think one day im going to come home to a hole in my rug!
He goes mad almost likes he is trying to make the area warm or something....anyone know??
A) Laying carpet over laminate floor?Q) I have been told that it is possible but you must screw the laminate down every nine inches to the sub floor. Is this correct?
A) The only reason to keep the laminate floor is to eliminate cost to remove it right?. So why are you going to spend more money fasting it down. It requires a higher skill to screw it down than to remove it. (assuming it is not glued down). If it is glued down , then removing it is not necessary. I would remove it. By the way, is the sub floor concrete or wood?,If it is wood no problem screwing it down, but if it is concrete, .... forget it. Its a nightmare.
Good luckLaying a carpet on a screed floor - Which type of underlay should we use ?Q) Our new house has a screed floor on the ground floor. The lounge will be getting carpeted and the remaining rooms will be getting tiled.
Which type of underlay should we use for under the carpet ? Should I be concerned about coldness underfoot ? If so, can you buy thermal underlay ?
What about the floor tiles ? Are they likely to be cold underfoot ? Is there anything you can do under floor tiles to make them warmer (other than under tile heating) ?
Thanks, Gav.
A) Any good quality underlay will be ok on the screeded floor, whether fibre or foam. . The combination of underlay and carpet gives good insulation. Other than under tile heating I know of nothing you could add under tiles to make tiles warmer. On both issues though I would expect, in newly built properties, that the floors are likely to have insulation under the concrete/screeded floors and would not be bare to the ground below. This in itself will give a less cold floor than older uninsulated properties. I have 150yr old cottage, solid floors. Tiled floor in kitchen is indeed cold in winter, but other ground floor carpeted rooms are fine. Yours, with the insulation I would expect of new build, should be even better.Laying carpet - Should I fit skirting Before or After the carpet is layed?A) Before, then fit carpet up to the skirting.Does anybody know how far a tacking strip should be from the wall when laying carpet?A) 1/2" that gives a very nice finish, use a knee kicker to stretch the carpet and a bolster to knock it in.
.laying carpet????Q) we are laying carpet at the weekend, any tips how to do this successful? we have all the tools, underlay etc....
just never done it before and don't want to make a balls up!!!!
A) Too many steps to type it all in. Check out the link.
In my opinion, if you have not done this before or seen it done, hire someone. It is not particularly difficult, but requires the know how.Can you lay carpet on top of carpet?Q) I have recently moved in to a rented house and in one room the carpet is a horrible pink colour. The problem is my landlord does not want me to take it up. As I am going to be here for about a year I would like to cover it with a cheap carpet. Can I lay another carpet on top.
A) yes u can but it may be hard to lay it and getit bac kup without ripping carpet underneath and very expensive, i would just by a really large rug for the room, therefore it will cover most of the carpet and u can take it with you , xIs it difficult to lay carpet?Q) My homes carpet REALLY needs to be replaced, but I can not affort to do it right now. Occasionally I see people who buy new homes give away brand new carpet because they are putting in hard wood. Is it possible for someone who is not very handy to learn to lay carpet themselves? Have you? How would you rate its difficulty from 1 to 10?
A) No, but its a lot easieer if the carpet wants to be layed.
carpet laying?A) A friend of mine charges 3 bucks per square foot.what is the appr. amount to charge for laying carpet?Q) If someone is going to start a business to lay carpet how much is the appr. amount to charge?
San Antonio, Tx
A) Haven't you left out how much to charge for tear-out and prep??? Best advice is to contact a few carpet layers for a free estimate on a couple rooms in your house. (Don't let them know you're not going to hire them no matter what!!)Does a person need to remove indoor/outdoor carpet before laying new 18 x 18 carpet squares?Q) I found a good deal on carpet squares with rubber backing. Would these require adhesive?
A) yes - do remove it and you should ask the dealer about which adhesive to use!How to keep a rug laying flat on carpet?Q) I have a large oriental rug that is on top of a wool berber carpet. I can't get it to lay flat...it keeps bunching up. It wasn't a problem at my old apartment where we had hardwood floors, but on carpet it keeps happening. Any tips?
A) Double sided tape works great. Carpet on carpet isn't a great idea but doable. You can find double sided tape at hardware stores and put it on the back where one side sticks to the rug and the other side sticks to the carpet. Velcro also works great but you'd have to "screw down" the velcro to the floor and tack the top part to the rug. Try double sided tape and if nothing else, duct tape is the answer. Ugly but it works.a question about laying carpet?Q) Ok, so I just bought a new home and had to replace all the carpet in it. After looking around at several carpet places, the more affordable way was to just buy the carpet and install it ourselves. Ok, call it a lesson learned. We had help from friends and family members putting the carpet in, and I really appriciate all of the love and hard work that went into it, but, there are really noticable bubbles in the entire area of the carpet. My question is will they go away over time? Or will you always be able to see them?
A) You will always be able to see them, and in fact I am sorry to say that they will get worse. You will need to have the carpet stretched to get them out. The problem is, if you did not install the carpet with tacking around the edges, it will be very hard to stretch. Call a professional carpet person to help you. They will give you a free estimate on stretching the carpet, and maybe fixing any other problems you might have.I am removing carpet and laying hardwood. What do I do to the subfloor to ensure pet odors are removed?Q) Ever since I moved in three years ago, it has been impossible to completely eliminate pet odors from the family room. So, I removed the carpeting and padding, and sprayed stains with ammonia and water, but my daughter's cat still thinks that the family room floor is a huge kitty litter box. I am going to put hardwood down, but want to know what the best product is to completely eliminate the pet odor from the subfloor, so that the cat will use the litter box, and not the floor after the remodeling.
A) Nature's Miracle is an excellent odor remover.

After you remove the carpet, spray the subfloor and let it dry.Laying New Carpet - How to make a curved edge when installing?Q) Hello, I am putting new carpet into my house (concrete slab) . . im using tack strips around the edges but am getting ready to do a room that stops at tile that is curved .. . any hints on keeping the edge nice around the curved edge (like a half moon) . . maybe smaller tack strip pieces around the edge & then glue between them . . . I am not a professional as you can see but the square rooms have come out very nice so i would like to give this a try... Thanks for your help.
A) I am not a professional either, but I believe tack strips would be painfully disastrous for you to use. I think that you will probably want to lay down some glue, stretch your carpet up to the tile, then cut the carpet to shape. You should then find some material to use like a threshold, that covers the time edge, and also the carpet edge. I think that this would be your best bet.cost of laying carpet?Q) If I purchase my own carpet, how much would it cost to have a professional lay it for me? The room is 12 X 22.
A) If you have it done professionally it's a rip off. When my friend got his professionally done it cost him about 300 bucks and that was the cheapest price he could find. I did mine myself. I just bought the carpet at the cheapest place I could find which just happened to be about 2 hours away but the price was 20 bucks cheaper per piece of some awesome carpet and I saved 300 bucks by doing it myself.
If you do go with professionally, get a quote and ask for pictures of carpet that they have put in right after they put it in and any recent pics like 2 years down the road. That's the key. It might look good once it's put in but you want to make sure that it will last.
Also, his cost was for his whole house as was mine. For a room that size, I wouldn't pay more than $50 bucks. How to make the edges look right when laying boat carpet?Q) We have begun to put down new carpet on our bass boat. We found an article on the web that explains how to do it.
But when we put the carpet on the front of the boat, the edges do not look right, there is no crease to push it down into. We havent glued it yet, but just layed it on there and dont know what to do with the edges. Is there any kind of stripping to put around the edges or what can do to hide the frayed edges?
Thanks for any information
A) depending on the type carpet you use, it might require a spray adhesive for the edges to remain intact and not fray which can be found at wally world. all cuts must be precise and the carpet must be glued well. i just finished a 1988 stratos boat and it looks great. good luck with the carpet and boating!!!any one know of any websites that give instructions on laying foamback carpet?Q) i'm going to carpet a small room in the basement without any experience i'm looking for a website that could give me some tips...thanks for anyone's help
A) http://www.kangaback.com/Install_carpet.htm
If you use adhesive, make sure you look for an adhesive that is low-odor. We had kangaback (that's another name for it) installed recently and they used a low-odor adhesive - still smelled for a few days.
